Trumpeter Erik Mahon Wins Young Artist Competition

For the second year in a row, a trumpet soloist will perform at the Denver Concert Band "Young Artist" concert!

After much deliberation by the judges, Erik Mahon was announced as this year’s winner. A senior at Chatfield High School, Erik has been the principal trumpet in their Symphonic Winds for two years and the lead trumpet in the Jazz Band for three years. He has studied under Joy Cayler, Art Rocha, and most recently Greg Gisbert and Al Hood. The piece that he will perform at the Young Artist Concert on April 30 is “Concert Etude Opus 49 for Bb Trumpet” by Alexander Goedicke.

Erik was selected to the All-State Jazz Band this year and the All-State Symphonic Band the last two years. He also performed in the University of Colorado High School Honor Band this year. In 2000, 2002, and 2003, Erik received the Mile Hi Jazz Festival Outstanding Musician Award. In addition to his musical honors, Erik ranks second in his class at Chatfield High School and is secretary of the Chatfield National Honor Society. Erik has been accepted to Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota.
