Tim Mendoza, a senior at the Denver School of the Arts, is the winner of the 2004 Denver Concert Band Young Artist Competition. As the winner, he will receive a $1,500 scholarship, and he will be the featured soloist at the Denver Concert Band’s April 24th concert. The piece that he will perform is “Grand Russian Fantasia” by Jules Levy.
Tim plays trumpet in the wind ensemble and the jazz workshop orchestra at the Denver School of the Arts. He also plays in the Denver Young Artists Orchestra. He and the School’s jazz group will go to New York in May to compete in the prestigious Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival. Tim will most likely attend the University of Denver in the fall where he will study music performance with Al Hood.
Tim began his trumpet studies in the fourth grade at the Colorado Honor Band, where he plays first chair in the Symphonic Winds. He made three all-state events this year: All-State Orchestra, All-State Jazz Band, and All-State Band. Wynton Marsalis and Rafael Mendez are major influences in his study of the trumpet. In addition to performing, he has composed some jazz pieces and a string quartet piece entitled “Fugue in G Minor”. When he is not rehearsing, he enjoys golf and racquetball.
