DCB Membership Basics
We rehearse Monday nights
throughout the year at the Central Presbyterian Church at 1660 Sherman Street
(click on the link for directions and detailed parking information). It's exactly two blocks north of the State Capitol at the corner of 17th and Sherman.
You enter the building through the doors to the right of the main
doors. The rehearsals are downstairs, and the stairs are visible as
soon as you walk through the doors.
Rehearsals run from 7:30pm to 9:30pm,
with a short break at 8:30pm.
We usually do not rehearse on some holidays and the Mondays following
formal concerts. A summary of "Rehearsal Exceptions" can be found on
our "Members" website page. You can
also check out our web site
concerts page for our upcoming performances.
The DCB does not conduct auditions for new members. A new member has an
up to 4-week trial period when he/she can rehearse with the group. The
first chair player, in coordination with the section manager and
conductor shall be responsible for deciding whether the new member is capable of playing to the standards of the DCB.
Also during that period, the new member must sit last chair,
regardless of ability.
After passing the initial trial period, the new member is officially welcomed into the band.
Members are expected to have no other regular commitment on
Monday nights. Chair seating varies with each section, but is
generally established by the first chair player, in coordination
with the section manager and conductor. Many sections usually rotate
everybody after every concert to keep things interesting. Solos also
can rotate. The conductor usually selects the soloist, and shall be
the final authority for all seating and solos within the DCB.
A
complimentary internal band newsletter (The Blowhard) is published
and distributed once a month to help keep the members informed of
band news, birthdays, future concerts, meetings, board meeting
minutes highlights, and other helpful information.
All band members pay $50 yearly dues
in September to help pay for the cost of the conductor's salaries and rehearsal space rental. Summer members pay $25.
