32nd Young Artist Scholarship Contest
The Young Artist Concert is another DCB
community outreach program that supports Colorado kids and wind
music education. We started it in 1977, when we realized that area
high school seniors needed a program that would encourage them to
pursue music performance as a profession. It is now one of our most successful programs. Eighteen of the past winners are currently performing professionally or pursuing a music performance degree.

Marie Mandico |
Piccolo Player Named Young Artist
Five talented seniors competed for the title of Young Artist and our
winner is Maria Mandico, a piccolo player from Rampart High School.
Maria will receive a $2,000 scholarship and be the featured soloist
at the Young Artist concert on Saturday, April 26, playing Vivaldi’s
Concerto for Piccolo in C Major, on a piccolo given to her by
a family friend. Maria is a flute and piccolo player at Rampart High
School in Colorado Springs, as well as a pianist, vocalist and
performing artist. Her musical accomplishments, among many others,
include winning the Young Artist’s Solo Competition in Colorado
Springs on the piccolo, winning the Calvary Church Young Musicians
Competition on flute, and receiving the Outstanding Freshman,
Sophomore, and Junior Award of the Rampart High School Band. Maria’s
private musical instruction includes instruction on flute with Karen
Morsch and Paul Nagem and instruction on piano with Sara McDaniel.
She has been accepted into the flute performance programs of CU
Boulder, DU, CSU, and St. Olaf.
"It was a turning point in my life, says 1985 winner Kristen Heller who performs for several groups including the Nashville Symphony. "The whole environment was wonderful, and it gave me a big push to pursue music."
"The Young Artist Contest was great," says 1996 winner Jenny Wilsea. "It helped me realize that preparing for an audition is a lot of work and very rewarding. I'm now starting my Masters of Clarinet Performance program at Michigan!"
Other winners include Paul Naslund
(1983), now 2nd trombone with the
Colorado Symphony Orchestra, David Wolfe (1994) at the Eastman School of Music, and Jason Herrick (1992) with the Chicago Symphony.
A $2000 scholarship is awarded to the winner.
