Guest artist Jason Shafer, Principal Clarinet of the Colorado Symphony, joins the band for Weber’s virtuosic Clarinet Concerto No. 2. The concert also features dramatic works including David Maslanka’s Mother Earth, Heed’s In Storm and Sunshine, and Ticheli’s fiery Vesuvius. Since 1977, the Denver Concert Band’s Young Artist Award has spotlighted extraordinary high school seniors, encouraging them to pursue their passion for music through both performance and scholarship support. The competition draws gifted students whose artistry and skill rival that of seasoned professionals. Many past winners have gone on to enjoy distinguished careers in music. This year’s winner will take the stage with the Denver Concert Band, performing a solo work that will leave you inspired. Come experience one of Colorado’s finest young musicians — and witness the moment a rising star steps into the spotlight.

In addition to the Young Artist competition winner, we will be working with the Sing Me a Story Program. This program gives children in need a chance to write and illustrate stories about anything they want. In turn, those stories are given to musicians to turn them into songs. We will be performing one of these pieces. More info on that to come! Visit their site for more information on the Sing Me a Story Program.
